Modern Optics (U01415)

In recent times, optical systems have progressed from being purely passive to being active thereby supporting adaptive optical processing in real-time.

In the first part of the course we shall consider the propagation of light as an electromagnetic wave and the interactions of e-m radiation with matter. In the second part we shall apply these ideas to:
(i) optical information processing in real-time using electro-optical devices and systems,
(ii) optical image processing using powerful Fourier systems and
(iii) image formation, correction and enhancement using novel adaptive optical systems.

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : At least 40 credit points accrued in courses of SCQF Level 9 or 10 drawn from Schedule Q, including Optics (PHY-3-Optics).

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course students, through critical study of the subject, should be able to display knowledge, show understanding of and tackle problems in the following areas:
1)Propagation of light in vacuo and through materials such as dielectrics, semiconductors and crystals
2)Interaction of light with materials including the manipulation of matter with light and light with matter
3)Fourier optics including holography and coherent optical processing
4)Interference and correlations between light beams
5)Students should also have gained experience in analysing critically some recent publications on novel experiments in optical physics
