Mathematical Physics Honours Project (U01411)

? Credit Points : 10  ? SCQF Level : 10  ? Acronym : PHY-4-MPHProj

The project involves an extended derivation in an area of Mathematical Physics. The problem will be outlined in a specified extract from a recommended textbook, or in specially written notes. It will be the task of the student to understand in detail the intermediate steps of the calculation and to appreciate its context.

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : For Mathematical Physics students only. At least 40 credit points accrued in courses of SCQF Level 9 or 10 drawn from Schedule Q, including Tensors & Fields (PHY-3-TensFlds) and Lagrangian Dynamics (PHY-3-LagDyn); Complex Variables and Differential Equations (MAT-3-CVD) from Schedule P, or equivalent.

Subject Areas

Delivery Information

? Normal year taken : 4th year

? Delivery Period : Full Year (Blocks 1-4)

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course the student should be able to:
1)understand in detail an extended theoretical derivation;
2)understand the underlying physical principles;
3)communicate this understanding orally.
The derivation will be presented as a set text in an area of mathematical physics at the level of a typical Senior Honours level course. A more complete specification of the available texts and form of the examination may be found in the syllabus.

Assessment Information

Project work assessed through Viva Voce examination, 100%
