Mechanical Engineering MEng Individual Project 5 (U01176)

During their final year students undertake a significant piece of project work under the supervision of a member of the academic staff within the School. The duration of the project depends on the specific degree programme, but will normally span a period of several months. Students are encouraged to generate their own project outline, subject to approval from the School's Teaching Committee; alternatively students may choose to develop a project from a list of titles supplied by a member of the academic staff. Projects may also be carried out in collaboration with industry. The project is advanced through deployment of accepted engineering and research practices.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

On completion of the module, students should be able to:

1. Carry out and manage a significant piece of project work, within a framework of time and resource limitations.

2. Demonstrate a high level of professional communication skills through writing a substantial final dissertation, through interim presentations and demonstrations.

3. Perform a rigorous literature review, making use of a wide range of library resources via traditional and online catalogues, including collections held within the University of Edinburgh libraries and through interlibrary loans, etc.

4. Demonstrate an increased level of awareness of the importance of organizational and time management skills.
