Sources for Scottish History (U01094)

The course involves study of primary sources relating to most periods of Scottish history, from medieval times to the twentieth century. There are visits to archives and repositories where these sources can be examined.

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : A pass in any first level historical course and any second level historical course or equivalent. Visiting students should normally have 3 to 4 History courses at grade B or above.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

The course will aim to present students with a variety of teaching and learning situations which will encourage the development of independent study skills, the ability to work constructively n a group and the ability to communicate the results of their work critically in oral and written form. At the end of the course, students should be able to:
demonstrate a grasp of historical analysis
engage at high level with scholarly debate
evaluate arguments critically
express their ideas in oral and written form.
More specifically they should be able to:
understand various types of primary sources for Scottish history
relate this understanding to the current historiography of Scotland.

Assessment Information

The course will be assessed by two items of coursework, each worth 50% of the marks for the course, as follows:
Firstly, students will be required to submit one item of work, chosen from the following list of three items
critical source analysis (5000 words)
historiographical analysis (5000 words)
Edition of a text (transcription, 8000 words; introduction, 2000 words)

2 essays of 2000 words
