The aim of this course is to study the basis of inherited diseases that affect the nervous system. Topics are chosen from neurological diseases that have been well characterised at a molecular level. These include trinucleotide repeat disorders such as Huntington's disease and Spinocerebellar ataxia, motor neuron disease, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. The course starts with a few introductory lectures and then takes the form of weekly "journal clubs". Each week a different topic is chosen and introduced by the lecturer; students are then given a paper or selection of papers to present and these form the basis of the discussion. Some weeks will have a clinical bias, others will be focused on molecular mechanisms. The course design works best for around 8-12 students, but up to 20 could be accommodated.
