Neurogenetics (U01068)? Credit Points : 10 ? SCQF Level : 10 ? Acronym : BMS-4-NSgenet The aim of this course is to study the basis of inherited diseases that affect the nervous system. Topics are chosen from neurological diseases that have been well characterised at a molecular level. These include trinucleotide repeat disorders such as Huntington's disease and Spinocerebellar ataxia, motor neuron disease, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. The course starts with a few introductory lectures and then takes the form of weekly "journal clubs". Each week a different topic is chosen and introduced by the lecturer; students are then given a paper or selection of papers to present and these form the basis of the discussion. Some weeks will have a clinical bias, others will be focused on molecular mechanisms. The course design works best for around 8-12 students, but up to 20 could be accommodated. Entry Requirements? This course is not available to visting students. ? Pre-requisites : Permission of the Curriculum Approval Officer. Normally Gene and Gene Action 2. ?
