Persistent Virus Infections (U01027)? Credit Points : 10 ? SCQF Level : 10 ? Acronym : BMS-4-MI24 A persistent virus infection is one which is not cleared from the host. An essential feature of such infections is an ability to evade the host defences. This can be accomplished in a variety of ways including antigenic drift, induction of tolerance, infection of immunopriviledged sites and latency. Persistent viruses may continuously replicate in their host or may adopt a strategy of minimal replication. In many cases persistent virus infections exist without overt problems. However, they may have consequences for welfare and quality of life and, in the long term, may cause life threatening diseases particularly when the host is immunosuppressed. Entry Requirements?
