Virus Interactions with the Immune System (U01021)? Credit Points : 10 ? SCQF Level : 10 ? Acronym : BMS-4-MI18 The aim of this topic will be to explore the various interactions of viruses and the immune system. This will involve presentation and discussion on how the immune system deals with particular viruses, how viruses deal with the immune system e.g. strategies for interfering with selected immune responses and how and why viruses co-habit with cells of the immune system. Major themes covered will involve: a) the immune response to acute and persistent virus infections, b) the 'virus immune system' - how viruses neutralise the interferon response, inhibit complement activation, switch off NK cells and inhibit MHC antigen presentation, and c) viruses that live inside lymphocytes and macrophages.
