Immune Recognition of and Response to Microorganisms (U01002)? Credit Points : 10 ? SCQF Level : 10 ? Acronym : BMS-4-MI01 The generation of an effective immune response is critically important for both the elimination of and protection from microorganisms. To understand the factors that influence the type of host defence that is generated knowledge of both the induction and effector stages of immune responses are required. This knowledge not only helps with the understanding of the disease pathogenesis but indicates potential therapeutic strategies. This Special Topic will consider ways in which different groups of pathogens (bacteria, viruses and protozoa) can modulate the host response by influencing antigen recognition, T-cell subset selection and the expression of host immunity. The sessions will include lectures covering antigen recognition, intracellular bacterial infections, cytokines and cytokine network, chlamydial infections and vaccine design. Student presentation and discussion sessions will focus on key papers that illustrate and extend a number of the lecture topics. Entry Requirements?
