National Socialism in Germany 1920-1945 (U00943)

This two-term course studies the consolidation and exercise of power by the National Socialist leadership from 1933 to the end of the Second World War. It is concerned primarily with German domestic affairs, but it usually deals also with the German occupation of European countries in the early 1940s. The subject matter of the course is thematic. A significant part of it consists of the study of documents from J. Noakes and G. Pridham (eds.), Nazism 1919-1945, volumes 2 and 4.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Students learn how to comprehend and interpret documentary texts; they improve their problem-solving, writing and oral skills; they develop greater precision in thought and judgment; they acquire discrimination in assessing both evidence and human actions and motivation; they develop team working skills.

A reading knowledge of German is not required.

Assessment Information

Each student writes two essay of 3,000 words. Students will also be required to give seminar papers and documents presentations.
The degree exam will consist of two two-hour papers.
