This course comprises three elements: an introduction to pitch-class set theory and analysis; an introduction to Schenkerian analysis; an introduction to the semiotics of music.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

- Students will have the ability to write pitch-class set analyses of simple atonal music.
- They will have the ability to write Schenkerian analyses of short examples of tonal music.
- They will have a knowledge of elementary music semiotics, and an ability to write paradigmatic analyses of monodic music.

Assessment Information

Two coursework assignments c.3,000 words (30% each) and one takeaway examination (40%).
