Dating Methods in Geomorphology (U00833)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 10 ? Acronym : GEO-3-DATNGMETH Students interested in quantitative assessment of the rates of environmental change will find this course useful. We will examine methods of numerical dating presently employed in geomorphology. Emphasis will be placed upon cosmogenic nuclide surface exposure dating of landforms, but radiocarbon, U-Th disequilibrium, 39Ar-40Ar, luminescence, dendrochronology and lichenometry will also be discussed. - Review the importance of dating in geomorphology
- Assess the strengths and limitations of methods presently used to date landforms and surficial deposits - Introduce students to newly developed techniques in Quaternary geochronology - Practice quantitative methods Assessment Information
Class assessment: Class exam 30%; Weekly Problem sets 30%; Student project presentation 20%; 2000 word paper 20%
