Commodities and Change in South Asia (U00788)

? Credit Points : 20  ? SCQF Level : 10  ? Acronym : GEO-3-SASIA

The course (CCSA) focuses on the social geography of South Asia. It explores the changing nature of religious, caste, class and gender inequalities with particular reference to democratisation, education and the state in rural north India. CCSA begins by providing a background to the history of South Asia and social structures in rural India. The course describes the deepening of democracy in India and associated politicisation of social groups formerly excluded from competitive politics. Drawing on field research at the local level, the course also considers how the expansion of school education and the activities of the 'local state' relate to rural people's social opportunities (issues of substantive as well as formal democracy). The course ends by encouraging reflection on the rights of India's poor
