This course is designed to develop further the student's aural awareness and understanding of various 19th-century harmonic idioms and the techniques which lie behind these styles.

? Delivery Period : Full Year (Blocks 1-4)

? Contact Teaching Time : 15 minutes per week for 22 weeks

? Additional Class Information : Taught in tutorial groups in Weeks 1,3,5,7,9,11. Students assigned to groups in Freshers Week.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

- To gain a more profound awareness of, and fluency in, dealing with early to mid 19th-century harmony.
- To gain an increasing awareness of musical textures, and a facility in writing these: in particular, string quintet and string ensemble.
- To gain knowledge of different 19th-century song repertoires and to gain fluency in writing piano accompaniments in these styles, in particular the German 'Lied' and the French melodie (especially Faure).

Assessment Information

Two coursework exercises (35% each) and one 3-hour examination (30%).
