Theoretical and Applied Developmental Cognition (U00613)

? Credit Points : 10  ? SCQF Level : 10  ? Acronym : PPL-4-TADC-PS

This course is in two parts. In the first (lectures 1 and 2), it critically reviews some of the major developmental theories with regard to how well they account for the mechanisms of normal growth and learning. In the second (lectures 3 to 5), it describes how experimental cognition is used to help characterise and explain the cognitive dysfunctions caused by neurodevelopmental disorders - especially those associated with autistic spectrum disorders (ASD) and Fragile X syndrome. Particular emphasis is placed on how psychological techniques can help unravel and embrace the heterogeneity of clinical expression of ASD and its associated effects on verbal and nonverbal intelligence.
