Psychology of Anomalous Experience (U00607)

? Credit Points : 10  ? SCQF Level : 10  ? Acronym : PPL-4-PAEXP-PS

This option provides an overview of research into experiences regarded as anomalous or unusual, from a biological, cognitive and phenomenological perspective. Included are experiences with a clearly clinical nature, such as those involved in delusion formation and maintenance, as well as those involved with unusual talents or peak human performance.

Students should emerge from the course with a better understanding of how to incorporate the richness of human experience into the existing body of methods and findings from the various areas of psychology they have already encountered. For example, they should have better tools to explore the application of psychology:

(1) to help counsellors working with people who have had troubling anomalous experiences;
(2) to help clients themselves deal with such experiences; and
(3) to help people explore the role of unusual experiences in the development of exceptional abilities and performance enhancement.
