Cognitive Psychology: Understanding Language (U00593)

This course aims:
- to provide a detailed understanding of research into language perception, and in particular of some of the controversies surrounding sentence processing;
- to demonstrate how the types of cognitive process and representations involved in language have a wider application to cognition as a whole;
- to detail some of the major experimental and modelling techniques used by cognitive psychologists;
- to develop critical reading and presentation skills by looking closely at key experimental evidence and theoretical developments in one area.

? Pre-requisites : Normally Psychology Methodology 1 (U00651) or equivalent.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course:
- you should be familiar with syntax-first, frequency-driven, context-driven and contraint-based models of syntactic ambiguity resolution;
- you should be able to apply your knowledge of these theories to a wider consideration of modularity in cognition;
- you should be familiar with major experimental techniques including self-paced reading, eye-tracking, and the visual world paradigm;
- you should be able to pick up a current cognitive journal article, and decide whether the theories presented are plausible and whether the research is convincing.
