This course is project based. The project is based on the taught foundation engineering course. The project brief includes appropriate starting references and students are required to study individually using the internet, the library and any other available source information to accomplish the specified task. The course focuses on the study and evaluation of site investigations, including engineering geological implications. A comprehensive assessment of several sets of site data of several different kinds is to be developed by the students which can be used in determining foundation conditions, the costing of earthworks, and other problems associated with these locations.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

The project is intended to be undertaken largely by personal study. It requires students to research the subject area sufficiently to enable them to critically evaluate alternative interpretations of the site investigation data. The student must clearly identify the limitations on each set of data and interpretation technique, and demonstrate these limitations in the application of each approach to the sites and situations considered.
