Hydraulic Engineering 4 (U00420)

In this course the student develops an ability to analyse complex hydraulic and sediment transport problems. The course relates theory to engineering practice. The emphasis of the course is in presenting a sound theoretical base from which practical applications in various aspects of hydraulic engineering and sediment transport can be made.

? Pre-requisites : Prior attendance at U00316:Fluid Mechanics 3 or equivalent

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

The primary objectives of the course are:
- to review the principles of steady flow in open channels and in pipes;
- to introduce and develop the theories of unsteady flow in open channels and in pipes;
- to relate these theories to the practical solution of problems of river control and network flow;
- to introduce basic theories on sediment transport processes and the resulting morphological changes.
