In this course, students develop an understanding of the application of the principles of soil mechanics to geotechnical practice. The application of the principles is made in both the design and construction areas. Topics used to illustrate these aspects include earthworks design and operation, road pavement design, the application of geophysical methods to geotechnical practice. An introduction to critical state soil mechanics is also included.

? Pre-requisites : Prior attendance at U00318:Geotechnical Engineering or equivalent

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, the student should be able to:
- design a highway pavement;
- specify and design earthworks for a major highway or dam project; and
- undertake simple geophysical surveys and make simple interpretations of the data.
