Behaviour and Design of Plate and Shell Structures 5 (U00413)? Credit Points : 10 ? SCQF Level : 11 ? Acronym : EEL-5-CVPSS This module develops the student's capacity to undertake the practical design of structural components involving 2D and 3D behaviour. It sets out the fundamental mechanics of slabs, plates and shells in the serviceability and ultimate limit states, and relates the mechanics to their transformation into design rules in the Eurocodes. In particular, the provisions of Eurocode 3 Parts 1.5, 1.6 and 1.7 for steel plates and shells are outlined. Entry RequirementsSubject AreasHome subject areaDelivery Information? Normal year taken : 5th year ? Delivery Period : Not being delivered ? Contact Teaching Time : 3 hour(s) per week for 10 weeks Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, the student should be able to:
- describe the stress resultants developing in plate and shell structures and the relationship between the elastic state and the collapse state; - describe the relationship between bending and stretching in cylindrical shells; - evaluate the strength of simple plate and shell structures using the procedures of Eurocode 3 Parts 1.6 and 1.7; - perform design calculations on a range of plate and shell geometries, leading to safe designs which include full allowance for 3D phenomena. Assessment Information
The assessment will be made on the basis of: Intermittent assessment 20%; Degree examination 80%
