Locational Modelling in Economic and Social Geography (U00396)

? Credit Points : 20  ? SCQF Level : 10  ? Acronym : GEO-3-LOCMODEL

The main concern is with certain aspects of the theory of location for services, with related locational problems of interest to decision makers in the public and private sectors and with models used to address these problems. The perspectives of communities affected by such decisions are also discussed. The early part of the course is concerned with discussing the role of models, theories, metaphors and other forms of representation. The nature and role of services in the public sector and the geographical forms of local government through which they are provided are explored in the contexts of Great Britain, USA and Scotland. This is followed by an examination of the theoretical work of Hotelling and Christaller on the location of services.
