Radio-Frequency Engineering 4 (U00379)

? Credit Points : 10  ? SCQF Level : 10  ? Acronym : EEL-4-ELRFE

This course draws heavily on the Electro-magnetics material taught in third year and aims to introduce the student to some of the techniques that are used at RF and microwave frequencies. Overall it is intended to give students an appreciation and insight into the problems of RF and microwave design.

Entry Requirements

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

After successful completion of this course a student will be able to:
- explain how electro-magnetic radiation arises from conductors carrying high-frequency currents
- describe the nature of the electro-magnetic field around a conductor
- determine the electro-magnetic field strength around a conductor carrying a high frequency current
- explain what is meant by "near" and "far" electro-magnetic fields
- explain the concepts of radiation resistance and radiation fields
- explain the concepts of gain and directivity as applied to antennas
- describe the properties and applications of the half-wave dipole
- explain array antennas
- describe the origins of electro-magnetic interference (EMI) and the means to control it in electronic systems
- use S-parameters to analyse multi-port networks at RF and microwave frequencies
- describe the types of components used at RF and microwave frequencies along with their applications
- perform simple microwave amplifier design.

Assessment Information

Assessment will be based on a single written paper of 90 minutes duration.
