Middle English (U00356)

This course involves study of aspects of English in the period 1100-1500. Topics will be variably selected from the following: study of selected texts from the early and late Middle English periods; a history of ME orthography; major aspects of vowel and consonant phonology; inflectional morphology; derivational morphology; aspects of syntax; regional variation in ME scribal texts.

? Pre-requisites : English Language 2 or Linguistics 2A + 2B or Linguistics 2A + 2L

? Prohibited combinations : This course may not be taken by students who have taken the course it replaces.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the course students will:
- have a sound understanding of diachronic change and diatopic variation at all levels of language in the Middle English period;
- be able to translate and comment on seen Middle English texts;
- be able to progress to independent research on the subject.

Assessment Information

(1) Coursework providing 50% of the final mark.
(2) a two-hour written examination providing 50% of the final mark.
