The main themes covered in Education 1Bh are 'Education and Social Inequality', 'Life in Classrooms', and 'Planning, Conducting and Evaluating Teaching' (PCET). Education and social inequality focuses on the relationship between education and inequalities in the wider society. It examines the ways in which social inequalities affect learners' experiences of education, their choices within education and their educational outcomes and focuses on four aspects of inequality - social class, gender, disability, and race and ethnicity. Life in classrooms is designed to help students to make sense of 'classroom life', and will explore the educational experience from the learner's point of view. Classroom research methods will be explored, enabling students to analyse and better understand life in classrooms. Planning, Conducting and Evaluating Teaching (PCET) focuses on lesson planning, self-evaluation, reflective practice, classroom management, assessment and the 5-14 curriculum. Workshops for PCET are programme specific, with separate workshops for B.Ed (Primary), B.Ed. (Technology), B.Ed. (PE) and a workshop for students who are not on teacher education programmes. The aims of each PCET workshop are designed to meet the learning needs of each of these groups of students.

1. To identify contrasting perspectives on educational provision
2. To engage students in analysis of the debates concerning the provision of education in contemporary society;
3. To enable students to acquire the skills and understandings that are common to educational professionals, such as the local and national context of their work;
4. To foster a critical attitude to questions relating to both educational policy and educational practice;
5. To be able to use appropriate research methods to describe and analyse life in classrooms
6. To contribute to the effective preparation of students for their work-based placements, or equivalent, and enable them to understand the relationships between professional action and theoretical perspectives.

Assessment Information

An essay (2000 words) demonstrating an ability to critically analyse contrasting perspectives on 'Education and Social Inequality’ and 'Life in Classrooms’ and the application of these theoretical perspectives to professional action.
