Behaviour and Design of Structures 3 (U00319)

? Credit Points : 20  ? SCQF Level : 9  ? Acronym : EEL-3-CVBDS

In this course, students gain experience in the structural behaviour of the elements of industrial framed buildings, and learn to proportion the sizes of these members to cope with loads applied due to the function of the building as well as the self weight of the materials. The lectures given familiarise the students with the techniques employed, and the practical nature of the subject is reflected in the emphasis placed on work in the drawing office. There are two distinct parts to the course: Structural Steel Behaviour and Design and Structural Concrete Design.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, the student should be able to: - Demonstrate an ability to choose the most appropriate method of construction for given design criteria;
- justify decisions taken to a group of colleagues and consider alternatives put forward by other members of the group;
- demonstrate an ability to size structural components on the basis of the most efficient and economic use of materials; put forward reasoned arguments, supplemented by design data, for adopting a particular form of construction;
- demonstrate skills in the design of members of a frame for both ultimate and serviceability conditions;
- demonstrate skills in providing neat and accurate calculations giving details of the sections to be adopted; and
- demonstrate skills in communication both orally and using detailed drawings and schedules.
