Gallia from the 3rd Century BC to Augustus (U00210)

This course enables students to study the archaeological evidence of a selected portion of the Iron Age record of the nearer continent and to consider it in relation to historical sources (dominantly Julius Caesar's de Bello Gallico in translation) and numismatic evidence. The period concerned is substantially protohistoric (ie the archaeology is 'text-aided') and is apparently one of relatively rapid change, and of increasing social, political, economic and cultural complexity. There are opportuinities to assess the physical evidence furnished by archaelological approaches in relation to current theoretical perspectives. The course also provides a relatively close-focus view on the diferent archaeological perpsectives prevalent in another European - primarly Francophone - culture (paraphrased as French, but including the southern Low Countries and Switzerland).
