Archaic States in the Ancient Near East (U00200)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 10 ? Acronym : ACE-3-AArchaic This course deals with the formation and characteristics of archaic states in the 4th and 3rd millennia. It enables students to analyse theoretical treatments of early states measured against inferences from text-rich archaeolgical sources. Regions and themes covered include the pristine states of Mesopotomia and the secondary states of Syro-Anatolia. The course will focus on such issues as agency and power relations, heterogeneity amongst complex societies, urbanism and exchange. Assessment Information
Coursework (essay): 40%, Examination (2 hour paper): 60%.
