New Orientations in Travel (U00160)

This course will study two-way travel between France and Africa through a variety of post-colonial texts and films. As an introduction, some of the issues arising from nineteenth-century European colonial travel writing will be analysed. This framework will help to assess the ways in which the twentieth-century mass movements of immigrants and tourists have led to new definitions of the notions of travel and travellers. Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

To acquire an advanced knowledge and understanding of the subject, recognising its complexity;
to construct coherent arguments which demonstrate an awareness of the problems posed by the texts and issues studied, and an ability to analyse them closely in French;
to discuss the issues raised in suitably sophisticated and formal French, both orally and in writing.
