This course will study two-way travel between France and Africa through a variety of post-colonial texts and films. As an introduction, some of the issues arising from nineteenth-century European colonial travel writing will be analysed. This framework will help to assess the ways in which the twentieth-century mass movements of immigrants and tourists have led to new definitions of the notions of travel and travellers.
