Law and Social Policy (SP0022)

? Credit Points : 20  ? SCQF Level : 10  ? Acronym : SPS-3-SPLAW

The two main aims of the course are:

- to outline and illustrate a socio-legal approach to the study of law and legal institutions
- through the use of empirical material, to consider the fairness and effectiveness of different methods of resolving disputes.

The course deals with civil law rather than criminal law. It focuses on the role of law and legal institutions in the UK and other 'post industrial' societies. It covers the concept of legal need, the provision of legal services as well as access to them and their regulation. It reviews a number of different mechanisms for resolving private and public law disputes e.g. courts, tribunals, mediation, regulation and the role of the ombudsman. It is thus a course about the law rather than a conventional law course.

At the end of the course, students will be expected to have a good understanding of a broad range of disputes and the advantages and shortcomings of different methods of dealing with them.
