Scottish Emigration, 1700-1939 (SH0061)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 10 ? Acronym : HCL-3-SCOTEM This course will present students with the opportunity to study the expanding amount of published research on Scottish emigration, to which the course organiser has contributed. This will include government intervention in Scotland to prevent emigration, assisted emigration, patterns of emigration from Scotland and the effect of a tradition of emigration on the development of Scottish society in modern times. The course is designed to build on the skills introduced in its prerequisite course, British Emigration 1603-1914, during the Autumn term. There will be increased emphasis on independent research and seminar presentation, and the structure of two 90 minute meetings a week will reflect this. Students will be encouraged to take a proactive role in seminars and to develop their own interests within the general structure of the course, building the confidence and self reliance necessary to increase depth of research and analysis in their final year special subject in History or Scottish History.
Assessment Information
There will be one essay of 3000 words weighted at one third of the overall mark and an examination paper of two hours duration set in the June diet of examinations, weighted at two thirds.
