Psychology 1 (PS0001)

An introduction to the main areas of contemporary scientific psychology: learning, development, and motivation in humans and animals; sensation and perception; language, memory, and thought; personality and individual differences; social and biological approaches to behaviour; applications of psychology.

Entry Requirements

? Special Arrangements for Entry : A quota of 300 students, with preference given in the following order: (1) Students admitted to degrees including Psychology (including BA Humanities and Social Science, with an intended treble in Psychology and Biological Sciences students who specified Psychology Honours on their UCAS forms and were admitted on that basis) and Visiting Students holding a written offer of a place; (2) Students enrolled for a degree in a PPLS or Social Sciences/Education subject, with priority given to first year students; (3) Students enrolled for degrees in Biological Sciences or in subjects which offer joint degrees with Psychology, with priority given to first year students. NO OTHER ENROLMENTS ACCEPTED EXCEPT BY PRIOR AGREEMENT WITH THE HEAD OF PSYCHOLOGY.

Students are required to attend 9 tutorials and submit 3 essays as part of the course requirements.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

LEARNING OUTCOMES
On completion of each section of the lecture course, students should be able to:
-Define key psychological concepts and illustrate them with relevant examples.
-Understand basic theoretical questions and arguments.
-Outline the types of research methods used in addressing these questions.
-Summarise some classic and some recent findings.
-Discuss how these findings relate to theoretical questions and arguments.

Assessment Information

SEMSTER 1
Essay of 1500 to 2000 words and a 2 hour degree exam of 75 multiple choice questions (MCQ) and one essay question at the end of the semester.
SEMESTER 2
Two essays of 1500 to 2000 words and a 2 hour degree exam of 75 multiple choice questions (MCQ) and one essay question at the end of the semester.

To fulfill the course requirements a pass in each of the semester exams is required, together with the submission of 3 essays.
