War and Justice (PO0045)

This course will introduce students to alternative normative approaches to questions abut the legitimacy of war, deterrence and the use of political violence. Approaches considered will include realism, just war theory, utilitarianism and deontology. The main aim of the course is to enable students to use and assess different normative theoretical traditions in relation to specific examples of both inter- and intra-state violence both in relation to the causes of war/terrorism and the means used to carry it out.

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : Visiting students must have prior study in Politics. As a general guide we usually require students to have completed three Politics courses at grade B or above. Admission to honours courses is limited and there can be strong competition for places.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

1. Students on "with Gender Studies" degrees must take Contemporary Feminist Thought in the Autumn Term of their Junior Honours year.
2. Students on Social Anthropology with Gender Studies degrees must take the Social Anthropology option(s) "Cross-cultural Study of Gender" and/or "Gender Categories and Representations". Students taking only one of these courses will substitute an additional Gender Studies option from the above list.
3. Students may not take both "Rights and Wrongs in International Politics" and "War and Justice".

Assessment Information

Assessment: 1 Essay (40%), 1 Examination (60%)
