Recent Developments in Political Theory (PO0015)

This course examines some central issues and debates in recent political theory, with particular emphasis on their international dimension. The approach is conceptual and normative. The course is intended for students with some experience in political theory at honours level (normally Modern Political Theory). Topics studied typically include sovereignty and the moral standing of the state, international human rights, and theories of global or international political organization and institutionalisation.

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : Visiting students must have prior study in Politics. As a general guide we usually require students to have completed three Politics courses at grade B or above. Admission to honours courses is limited and there can be strong competition for places.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

- Students will further develop their skills of conceptual and normative analysis of contemporary political issues.
- They will gain an understanding of how concepts and methods of political theory can be applied in contexts that do not presuppose the absolute sovereignty of the state.
- They will learn how to evaluate substantive views on certain key normative issues in contemporary international politics.
