Research Topics in Software Engineering (P02012)

This course introduces students to research in software engineering, with the aim of equipping them both to do research in future and to follow research that might be relevant outside academia. They will study a selection of current topics, learning to find and read relevant papers, as well as to make use of other resources such as the web and seminars.

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : For Informatics PG students only, or by special permission of the School. Knowledge of software engineering to first degree level.

? Co-requisites : Informatics Research Methodologies is a highly recommended companion course.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the course students will be able to:

* Describe several current areas of research in software engineering.
* Assess their understanding of a given paper or other research artifact in software engineering.
* Identify, analyse and attempt to fill gaps in their own knowledge, using a range of resources relevant to software engineering research.
* Critically review a software engineering research paper.
* Present a summary of a software engineering research paper orally, using appropriate visual aids.
* Describe the relationship between several software engineering research artifacts, pointing out common topics and areas of agreement and disagreement.
* Propose a suitable method for evaluating a software engineering research hypothesis.
* Benefit from attending a software engineering research seminar, gaining some understanding even when the details of the topic may be beyond the student's current capabilities.

Written examination - 70%
Assessed assignments - 30%
