Professional and Generic Psychological Research Skills (P01583)

The course will be conducted as seminar sessions which explore a range of the fundamental professional presentation, writing and publishing skills. The course aims:
1. Provide instruction on peer review and critical appraisal of literature.
2. To provide instruction on professional standards in presenting research findings in a vairety of media (posters, presentations, reports).
3. To explore efficient ways of searching literature and managing reference materials.
4. To examine the style and standards of academic writing
5. To provide instruction in the development and presentation of research ideas.

Topics will typically include
1. The peer review process
2. Critical appraisal skills
3. Giving conference talks (including the use of powerpoint)
4. Poster preparation
5. Searching the literature and managing reference lists
6. Academic writing
7. Writing for non-technical audiences
8. Using APA format
9. Preparing research proposals.
10. Preparing technical aspects of research grants and sources of funding
