Deaf Studies (P01466)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 11 ? Acronym : EDU-P-P01466 This course will be the first of the six M.Ed./PGD courses in Additional Support for Learning (Deaf Education). It will locate Deaf Education within the broader framework of Deaf Studies, enabling course participants to explore critically the differing constructions of deafness. Course members will
o Demonstrate an awareness of the different types of discourse associated with deafness; o Be aware of the different constructions (eg social, medical) of deafness; o Show a critical understanding of the notions of Deaf Community and Deaf Culture; o Be familiar with the key aspects of Deaf history and heritage; o Be familiar with and be able to use the resources of a range of d/Deaf organisations; o Be familiar with the history of Deaf Education and its relation to present-day d/Deaf perspectives on Deaf Education; o Be familiar with Deaf media, including magazines, journals, regular television programmes. Assessment Information
Course members will
o Undertake a critical review of a text which focuses on the Deaf World or Deaf Community (the text may support these notions or be critical of them). o Undertake a critical review of a signed TV programme such as the Sign On debate on Deafness and Disability or one of the See Hear programmes on Deaf History; o Produce a written or signed assignment of 4000 words/40 minutes signing.
