This course will examine the basic economic principles and methods used to analyse health and health care. The emphasis is on the application of economics to key research issues and policy challenges surrounding the health of populations.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Students will: Gain knowledge of the central microeconomic concepts that can be applied to health and health care.
Develop their understanding of the potential role of markets in health care regulation and reform. Acquire skills for conducting and appraising economic evaluations of health care programmes. Progress their knowledge and understanding of how basic concepts of equity can be used to evaluate inequalities in health service access, use and outcomes .

Assessment Information

The assessment will be based on a course assigment and participation in case studies.
