Immunology and infection (P01422)? Credit Points : 40 ? SCQF Level : 11 ? Acronym : MED-P-P01422 The primary aim of the Immunology and Infection Course is to provide an understanding of the concepts that describe the normal working of the immune system. We will then try to integrate the basic molecular and cellular mechanisms of the immune system with disease processes associated with allergy, autoimmunity, inflammation and infection. The first half of the course deals with the intra- and inter-cellular processes, which determine the development and maturation of the immune system and the antigenic specificity of immune reactions. The second half examines immune effector mechanisms and responses to infection in the context of disease. Students are expected to analyse disease processes in the light of current immunological thinking. Entry Requirements? This course is not available to visting students. ? The aim of this course is to act as an elective research theme for the MSc/Diploma by Research in the Life Sciences Programme and to provide students with the opportunity to acquire relevant research skills and associated generic/transferable skills, in order to:
- provide students with thorough and specific preparation for 3 year PhD training in the life sciences; - award an MSc by Research en route to the PhD; provide an opportunity, if necessary or desirable, to exit from research training at the end of Year 1 with an Edinburgh Masters or Diploma by Research Degree in the Life Sciences Assessment Information
