The Medieval Scottish Burgh (P01082)

The course aims to make students familiar with the key physical and institutional features of the medieval Scottish burgh. Areas covered include physical layout; the topography of the burgh; key landmarks; social and administrative organisation; the burgh guilds; the ritual year and the burgh community.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

To familiarise students with the characteristics that distinguished medieval urban life in Scotland
To gain an understanding of the topography of the medieval town and how that affects subsequent development.
To appreciate the hierarchies that shaped and dominated medieval burgh life.

Assessment Information

One essay of c.4,000 words.
