Acronym : EDU-P-P01026 Education is hardly conceivable in other than normative terms, and may well be regarded as a basically moral practice. This course aims to explore various normative dimensions and implications of education and teaching - concerning values, moral conduct, personal and social development (including issues of sexuality and health), religion, authority and responsibility, citizenship and so on - from a variety of past and present moral and social philosophical perspectives. LO1. Appreciate the significant contemporary educational impact of the ideas of such key ethical theorists as Plato, Aristotle, Hume, Kant and Mill.
LO2. Understand some of the key past and present ideas that have shaped contemporary conceptions of moral education and development LO3. Understand some of the key past and present ideas that have shaped contemporary conceptions of aesthetic and arts education LO4. Understand some of the key past and present ideas that have shaped contemporary appreciation of the bearing of social theory and principles on social, personal and citizenship education. LO5. Understand some of the key contemporary problems of religious education in liberal and culturally diverse societies LO6.
