The Postgraduate Curriculum (P00992)

The course will explore the present curriculum modules and debate their value and potential limitations in relation to post-graduate medical education. The module in particular will explore the applicability of 3 curriculum modules to postgraduate medical education, process model, objective model and outcome model.

The course will also explore the limitations of competency based programmes and will ask participants to consider the difference between competency, capability and performance in medical practice.
- To understand the theoretical basis for post-graduate curriculum design
- To gain knowledge of present post-graduate curriculum
- To gain understanding of how curricular are designed and why they are designed in the way they are
- To gain knowledge of the need for the value of curriculum to both doctors in training and to trainers, and to gain knowledge of the limitations of the curriculum in practice.
- To be aware of the concepts such as the hidden curriculum and the importance of assessment driving curricular activity.
- Participants will gain knowledge of the outcome, process and objective models of curriculum and will be able to actively discuss the merits of each in relation to post-graduate activity.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

In relation to the undergraduate and postgraduate curriculum, by the end of the course the student will be able to:

- Identify the elements of the undergraduate course that form a direct link to the postgraduate phase.
- Discuss the skills, knowledge, values and beliefs and experiences link the undergraduate course to the postgraduate phase
- To Discuss the concepts of the curriculum
- Describe the limitations of the curriculum
- Discuss different curriculum models
- Design a curriculum, critically review a curriculum and manage a curriculum
- Design a curriculum, and plan curricular content relevant to post-graduate medical education
- Engage constructively in curricular design, curricular evaluation and curriculum implementation

In relation to CPD, by the end of the course the student will be able to:

- Discuss the basic concepts in CPD
- Think critically about Continuing Professional Development
- Debate the role of Informal v Formal Learning
- Identify the role of education as a change agent
- Reflect on change in clinical practice
- Explain how change in practice can be developed and maintained
- Recognise the limitations of Continuing Professional Development
- Describe the professional and political needs of a professional development programme
- Designing CPD modules
- Evaluating CPD modules
- Critically reviewing existing CPD processes and structures

Assessment Information

The course will be assessed by one piece of coursework. This will amount to 100% of the assessment. Students can chose between the following tasks:

Participants will analyse the curriculum for their own speciality and review it in relation to one of the models discussed.
OR
Participants will be asked to list their recent CPD activities and document how these were identified and how they changed their own individual practice.
