Educational Research Methodology (P00989)

This diploma level course will address the principles of research methodology in Medical Education, sufficient to enable the student to prepare and complete the thesis required for the masters award.

More specifically the following areas will be considered:
- The nature and purpose of research
- Theoretical frameworks of research practice
- An exploration of the process of research with established research practitioners
- Designing a research question
- Locating the literature, reading and critical appraisal (including e-data bases)
- Methodology. Issues of validity and reliability of evidence. Gathering evidence by qualitative and/or quantitative techniques, sampling techniques, surveys, case studies, comparisons, diaries, observational studies, planning and conducting interviews, focus groups, gathering 360 degree evidence and planning for statistical analysis.
- Analysis and presenting results.
- Reflections and conclusions.
- Writing the thesis.
- Writing for publication.

Examples will be drawn from the literature to illustrate the principles.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of the module the students will be able to design and conduct a piece of original research sufficient to write a thesis and prepare a series of papers for publication.

Assessment Information

The course will be assessed by one piece of coursework. This will amount to 100% of the assessment. The student will be required to frame a research question, complete a literature review and provide a 4,000 - 5,000 word outline on the research topic and methodology.
