Current Issues in Medical Education (P00988)

This certificate level course will explore current issues in Medical Education. It will be discussion based and led by an expert in the area under discussion. Participants will be provided with background material prior to the session. The focus will be on issues of topical interest and introduce participants to the theoretical prospective and pragmatic difficulties involved in these areas in medical education. Examples of issues include:
- Medical workforce planning
- Modernising medical careers
- Managing under performance
- Teaching professional values to medical students
- Role of humanities in medical education
- Use of Simulation in undergraduate teaching
- Teaching and assessing communication skills

The course will be participant led with the expert acting as a resource.

The aims of the course are:
- To introduce participants to an area of current topical interest
- To introduce participants to expert led discussion and provide the opportunity for participants to manage a group session
- To encourage group dynamics through an interactive session
- To encourage participants to reflect critically on a current issue
- To provide an evidence base to participants to develop their knowledge and thinking on current concepts in medical education.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of this module the student will be able to:
- Lead a discussion on current concepts in medical education
- Explain the theoretical basis of current concepts
- Conduct a critical analysis of an incident and resolve a problem
- Analyse issues of change management in medical education
- Demonstrate skills in group participation and skills in managing an interactive session
- To reflect critically on how to provide information on a topic in an interesting manner

Assessment Information

The course will be assessed by two pieces of coursework. Each piece of work will count for 50% of the module's assessment.
- To critically comment and review each session through the reflective diary
- To critically review a recent editorial from a peer reviewed medical education journal.
