Cognition and Consciousness (P00972)? Credit Points : 10 ? SCQF Level : 11 ? Acronym : VET-P-P00972 This module focuses on historical and current interpretations of the concept of animal consciousness as well as on experimental approaches to the study of animal consciousness. Implications of the study of animal consciousness for models of animal welfare will be studied as well as basic principles of the moral evaluation of animal use. Entry Requirements? Pre-requisites : None. Throughout these lectures active participation and questioning by students is encouraged. There will be discussion of various topics in small and larger groups during each lecture. Students will particularly be encourgaed to develop and formulate their own positions in the animal consciousness debate. ? Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Students should develop an understanding of historical and current interpretations of the concept of anmal consciousness. They should be familiar with the main experimental approaches to the study of animal consciousness, and be able to critically evaluate these, and discuss their implications for the study of animal welfare. Finally they should understand the basic principles of the ethics of animal use.
