Acronym : MED-P-P00932 This course will examine legal and ethical concepts of personhood and rights with reference to issues in health care and public health. These will include issues related to: the beginning and end of individual human lives; children; disability; torture, cruel and degrading treatment; the rights of individuals and the interests of society; health promotion; global health; animals and the environment. Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Students will:
- gain knowledge of legal and ethical concepts of personhood, rights and moral status with reference to issues related to health care and public health - develop an understanding of ethical arguments and counterarguments related to the moral claims of individuals, society and the environment - develop skills of moral reasoning, analysis and advocacy related to the rights and interests of individuals and society. Seminar presentations are a requirement for satisfactory completion of the course. Formal assessment will be by a written examination to include questions both on ethical theory and on issues related to health care and public health.
