Chivalry, Warfare and Society in Medieval Scotland (P00818)

The course explores the way in which chivalric literature and thought affected the prosecution of war, the ordering of society and the intellectual and cultural life of the medieval Scottish aristocracy. Although concentrating on Scottish examples the course will address general issues affecting the nobility of Western Europe in the Middle Ages. AS well as looking at a wide rqnge of Secondary literature we shall also be examining a number of relevant primary sources such as Friossart's Chroniques, Barbour's Bruce, armorials and besiaries.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Through completion of this course students should not only have gained knowledge and understanding of this period of Scottish History but should have had some experience of the following skills:

Critical reading of primary and secondary sources
Completion of independent research leading to seminar presentation and submission of written work to a required standard.
Participation in group seminar work and an appreciation of the responsibility to other members of the group that such work entails.
