Principles of Environmental Sustainability (P00807)

This course provides a foundation to understanding the concept of environmental sustainability. The meaning and evolution of the term, sustainable development, is analysed and assessed with respect to environmental, economic and social factors. Examples of these factors are considered, including: the functioning of the biosphere and biogeochemical cycles; human impacts, such as climate change and ozone depletion; economics and the environment; sustainability indicators; international trade and debt; global population trends, resource distribution and equity; sustainable food production.

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : Available only to postgraduate students

? Special Arrangements for Entry : The maximum class size is 30, and it is a core course for the MSc Environmental Sustainability programme, which normally attracts about 20 students. The remaining 10 places are allocated to students on other School of GeoSciences MSc programmes by prior agreement between relevant Programme Directors and the Course Organiser.

Anyone wishing to enrol students from outside the School of GeoSciences should make a specific arrangement with the Course Organiser (Simon Allen: simon.allen@ed.ac.uk; tel 507215).
