Applied Image Processing (P00740)

The course is designed to complement the Theory of Image processing course and explores the practical implementation and practice of image processing techniques. Emphasis is placed on a practical understanding of appropriate methods of image processing. Practical experience in the utilisation of optical remotely sensed data will be gained using the ERDAS Imagine image processing software. Emphasis is also placed on image interpretation.

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : Normally to be taken in conjunction with Fundamentals of Remote Sensing. Available only to postgraduate students.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

- understand the differences between remote sensing systems and be aware of their characteristics and limitations and potential usefulness in different applications
- competently be able to process and interpret remotely sensed images.
- identify specific applications where remote sensing may be used as a tool for monitoring and research.
- locate, read and summarise relevant literature, from both traditional and electronic media, to extend your understanding of the topic.
- develop reasoned arguments, firmly grounded in the available literature.
- plan and write assignments, within the specified parameters and to a professional standard.
- take responsibility for your own learning through reading and the preparation of assignments, and reflect upon your learning experience.
