Criminological Research Methods (P00615)

Five weekly seminars in the first semester discuss a range of research methods through a critical evaluation of major examples of criminological research. Four further seminars in the first semester discuss the students' proposals for their individual research projects. In the second semester, students carry out and write up their individual projects. For this purpose, each student is assigned a supervisor from among the academic staff in criminology.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

1. To provide students with a knowledge of the data and methods utilized in criminological research
2. To enable students to evaluate the methodological strategies adopted by other researchers and to develop a critical appreciation of the problems and possibilities presented by the different research methods, techniques and data
3. To provide the basic skills and knowledge needed to design a simple criminological research project
4. To give students experience in carrying out and writing up a short research project on an approved criminological topic of their choosing

Assessment Information

One essay of up to 3,000 words and one report of no more than 3,000 words.
