Hebrew Prophecy (P00600)

The aim of the course is to develop critical reading of the complete biblical prophetic corpus. It reviews the development of the language used for 'prophecy' in the Hebrew Bible. It considers the depiction of prophets and seers and 'men of God' in the narrative books of the Bible. And it looks in turn at the books of Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and the 'Book of the Twelve'.

? Pre-requisites : The equivalent of 60 credits in Hebrew or Old Testament

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Familiarity with the main themes of the Former and Latter Prophets in the Hebrew Bible. Familiarity with the terminology of 'prophecy', 'vision' etc. An understanding of how 'biblical prophecy' relates to prophecy in the Ancient Near East.

Assessment Information

Students will be assessed on their leadership of and participation in seminars (20% of the total; by a class essay, based on a seminar topic and selected with the permission of the class teacher (30% of the total); and by a two-hour end of semester examination (50% of the total)
